Unsure whether the benefit is SSI or SSDI / Social Security?
How to Determine Social Security Benefit Type
When reviewing Social Security income, first confirm whether an SSA-1099 was issued.
If a taxpayer received an SSA-1099, the benefits reported are not SSI. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is never taxable and is not reported on an SSA-1099.
An SSA-1099 is issued only for:
- Social Security retirement benefits
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
- Survivor benefits
These benefits may be taxable depending on provisional income and filing status.
If no SSA-1099 was issued and the benefit is identified as SSI, those payments are not taxable and should not be included in this calculation.
Benefit Type
SSI benefits are never taxable. SSDI may be taxable based on provisional income.
